Eyjafjallajökull, or The Reason Europe's not Flying

Sometimes, you see an image that just makes you silently mouth the words “holy shit.” This is Eyjafjallajökull, the sub-glacial volcano in Iceland that’s causing big time headaches for European air travel. Steam and ash rise through the air as the heat from the volcano sublimates ice from the glacier above. The ash in the cloud builds up enough of a static charge to cause lightning to flare around the unbelievably chaotic yet beautiful cloud.
Wow.
