Another Small Business Dies

FentonsI was saddened and dismayed to read that Fenton’s Sporting Goods on Main Street in Springfield is closing.  In business since 1924, Fenton’s served the equipment needs of countless Springfield-area athletes.  Every baseball glove I used, every bat I owned and every pair of spikes I wore came from Fenton’s.  The store had been in business since 1924, but is now just one more family owned casualty of national big box chains.  The opening of Dick’s Sporting Goods on across the Connecticut on Riverdale road was a fatal blow to the Fenton family and their business.  Household budgets are tight, and the ability to save a couple of dollars buy buying that bat, ball or racquet at a cavernous discount store wins out over frequenting a service-first local business.  It’s understandable, but sad nonetheless as a link to the sporting days of my childhood is lost.
